The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet given any official information on what will be the retention rules for the mega auction for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. But it is believed that the BCCI may reinstate an old rule at the request of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), to help Chennai Super Kings retain former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the squad. In fact, a rule was first made by the BCCI in the IPL that a player who had retired from international cricket for more than five years was included in the auction as an uncapped player. This rule was applicable from the start of IPL till the year 2021. It was later cancelled. Now according to a report, BCCI held a meeting with IPL franchise owners on July 31, in which Chennai Super Kings raised the issue and requested the reinstatement of the rule. According to reports, Chennai Super Kings’ request has not received much support from other franchises, but the BCCI is in favor of bringing back the rule. Chennai Super Kings may retain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as an uncapped player if the rule is reinstated.
