A terrible landslide occurred in East Sikkim on Tuesday morning. A power station in the state was almost completely destroyed due to this horrific landslide. Small and large landslides have been happening here for the past few weeks. Because of this, the hill adjacent to the 510 MW power station was in danger. On Tuesday morning, a large part of the mountain collapsed and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)’s Teesta Stage Five Dam power station was covered in debris. The incident took place near Deepu Dara in East Sikkim’s Singtam. The landslide, captured on video by locals from a nearby hill, showed huge boulders and debris rushing towards the power house, causing extensive damage. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident. The power station was evacuated a few days ago due to continuous landslides. In a video recorded by people working near the power station, it can be seen that a part of the mountain is seen collapsing and soon a large part of it falls on the power station. According to local residents, the landslide that occurred around 7:00 am was probably caused by the NHPC Teesta Stage V tunnel that passes under the area. According to local media reports, 17 to 18 houses were also damaged in the landslide, forcing five to six families to move to NHPC quarters for safety. Apart from the damage to the residential houses, the power house in the region has also suffered a lot. Let us tell you that in October 2023, there was a lightning strike in Sikkim. This led to the flooding of the Lhonak Glacial Zeal and the destruction of the Stage 5 dam. The bursting of the aura caused a terrible flood. Due to which some parts of Teesta Dam in Chungthag of Sikkim’s largest hydropower project overflowed.
