Ahmedabad: Cases of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya are continuously increasing in Gujarat. Especially since chikungunya cases have doubled compared to last year. If there is encephalitis with chikungunya, there is a risk of damage to organs like kidney, brain. Generally, cases of chikungunya are 10 times less than dengue. But compared to last year, more than 30 percent cases of chikungunya have been reported this time. Chikungunya cases are many times more than the official statistics coming out now. This time during the monsoon, chikungunya cases have started to increase at double speed. According to doctors this time encephalitis is also seen in some patients along with chikungunya. These patients have symptoms similar to chikungunya like fever, joint pain, rash. In the second week after this, the inflammation starts to reach the brain.
Symptoms of Chikungunya:
Due to which the patient complains of weakness, excessive sleepiness, difficulty in walking, irregular urination. Samples from a patient with this type of symptom found in Delhi have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing. Based on which it will be clear whether the virus is mutation or a new strain of Chikungunya. The number of such cases is very low in the country at present. But this serious type of illness is known as ‘Guillaion Bear Syndrome’. Apart from affecting the nerves, there is also a risk of severe weakness and paralysis. There are also some patients who fall from walking due to severe weakness.Ahmedabad Medical Association Vice President Dr. Mukesh Maheshwari said, “We have seen more cases of chikungunya this time than last year. Chikungunya cases were relatively few until June. But now there has been an alarming increase in August-September. Chikungunya accounts for 10th the number of dengue cases each year. However, this time Chikungunya cases are also seen more. There has been a 30 percent increase in chikungunya cases over last year. We have not seen many cases of chikungunya encephalitis there. This virus can affect any organ in the body. Vigilance is required if the patient is immunocompromised or the diagnosis is delayed. It is being claimed that cases of Chikungunya affecting the brain have not yet been reported in Gujarat. Of course, such cases have been seen in Delhi-Maharashtra, in which the patient had to be treated in the ICU for four-five days and in some cases 8-10 days due to brain damage due to chikungunya. A brain scan of this patient showed swelling in the brain.
