New Delhi: By-elections are being held for Rajya Sabha MPs in nine states. However, even before the election, nine MPs of BJP and two of its allies won the election unopposed. Along with this, the position of NDA in the Rajya Sabha has strengthened again and has reached a majority. As per the current situation in the Rajya Sabha, 119 seats are required for majority. BJP now has 96 seats while NDA has a total of 112 seats. Apart from this, six appointed MPs and one independent also have support. BJP candidates for Rajya Sabha elected unopposed include Mission Ranjan Das and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Chaudhary from Haryana, George Kurien from Madhya Pradesh, Dhirya Sheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, Bhattacharjee from Tripura and Ravneet Singh Bittu and Rajiv from Rajasthan. Similarly, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Telangana was also elected unopposed. Ajit Pawar Juth’s NCP’s Nitin Patil has become Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra, RLM’s Upendra Kushwaha from Bihar. While the Congress seat as Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha remained safe, the Congress tally increased to 27. Which is more than the 25 seats required for the Leader of Opposition’s seat. Due to lack of majority in the Rajya Sabha, it was difficult for the NDA government to pass the bills, although now that it is close to the majority, it may be easier to pass the bills despite opposition opposition. Earlier, the government introduced several bills including parties not included in the NDA, such as the Biju Janata Dal, YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress. Currently both these parties have lost power. In which the BJP is in power after defeating the Janata Dal in Odisha, while Chandrababu Naidu’s party, an ally of the NDA, has won power in Andhra Pradesh.
