Kolkata Rape & Murder Case: The Kolkata Rape and Murder Case is being heard in a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud by the Supreme Court suo moto. Meanwhile, CJI mentioned an incident related to him and said that he too was once forced to sleep on the floor of a government hospital. CJI said, “All of our family members-relatives must have gone to the government hospital from time to time. Once when someone from my family fell ill, I too had to sleep on the floor of a government hospital. We have passed through this phase. I have seen doctors working for 36-36 hours at this time. We would like to assure the doctors here that we are concerned about the current condition of the doctors and their safety. We are monitoring the situation.” The Supreme Court said it sympathized with all the patients coming to government hospitals. Resident doctors of AIIMS Nagpur told the Supreme Court that they were being tortured for protesting against a case of rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. The Supreme Court asked the protesting doctors to return to work first and assured that no adverse action would be taken even after returning to work.

Slamming the Kolkata Police, the Supreme Court has said that the delay in registering the case in this unnatural death case is extremely distressing and raises a big question on the system. The Supreme Court has ordered the Kolkata police officer who lodged the first FIR in the rape-murder incident to appear in the next hearing and provide information about when the FIR was lodged. The CBI told the Supreme Court during the hearing that the state police first told the victim’s parents that It is a case of suicide, then told them that it is a murder. The CBI also told the Supreme Court that a friend of the victim’s female doctor had expressed apprehension of hiding the facts in the case and insisted on videography. The Supreme Court also took note of the status report filed by the CBI, West Bengal government in the Kolkata rape-murder case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that the most shocking fact is that the FIR was registered at 12.45 pm after the funeral of the deceased victim.
