Government Appeal to Doctors: The incident of rape of a woman doctor in Kolkata has reverberated across the country and is being protested by doctors across the country. The Indian Medical Association has announced a 24-hour strike on August 17. Now in this matter the Union Health Ministry has given an obligation to ensure the safety of doctors through a press release. Apart from this, a committee will be formed and suggestions will be sought to take necessary steps. Due to rising cases of dengue and malaria, the ministry has also requested doctors to be present on duty. The Indian Medical Association has announced a 24-hour strike on August 17. The strike will last from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday. During the protest, all health services will remain closed except for essential services and emergency treatment. Doctors are demanding justice and immediate reforms. Resident doctors are demanding a central law to protect them from violence at the workplace and at the place of residence. Amid the doctors’ strike, Union Health Minister JP Nadda met leaders of Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Resident Doctors Association of Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Delhi. In the meeting, health service unions expressed serious concern about the safety of health service personnel at workplaces and demanded swift and decisive action to provide safety to health service personnel.
