Congress MP in Lok Sabha Manikam Tagore has written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressing concern over shortage of 10, 20 and 50 rupee notes. He wrote in the letter, “There is a shortage of 10, 20 and 50 rupee notes in the market, due to which the poor are facing a lot of hardship.” Congress MP Manikam Tagore wrote in a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman that, “There have been reports that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stopped printing these notes to promote UPI and cashless transactions. It is understandable to promote digital payments. But it is affecting people who are not currently using digital payments. Especially the people of rural India are facing hardship. Manikam Tagore wrote in the letter that, ‘This decision also violates the fundamental right to get currency. The shortage of small notes is also affecting small businesses. Daily wage laborers and street vendors depend only on cash.’ He asked the Finance Minister to direct the RBI to start printing small notes. Apart from this, attention should also be given to digital payment infrastructure in villages.
Notes are printed at four places in the country:
It is worth mentioning that, notes are printed in four places in the country. The Department of Currency Management carries out printing of notes as per RBI guidelines. Two of the currency note presses are owned by the Government of India and two by the Reserve Bank. There are Indian-owned note presses at Nashik and Dewas. Besides, the presses of Mysore and Salboni are owned by Reserve Bank of India.
