Kolkata R. G. As massive protests are going on in Howrah today (August 27) against the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Khar Medical College, the police lathi-charged the protesters taking part in the ‘Nabanna March’. The State Secretariat of Nabanna is located in Mandirtala, Howrah, and the Government of West Bengal is run from here. The atmosphere has turned tense across Howrah during the protests. The police had put up barricades to stop the protesters from going to Nabanna, but the protesters broke the barricades. Meanwhile, the police have lathi-charged the protesters and fired tear gas shells. Police are also using water cannons. In the meantime, many protesters have also been arrested. Chaos broke out on the Howrah Bridge after the protesters jumped over the security wall erected by the police, during which the protesters also pelted stones after the police lathi-charged, injuring some police personnel. Apart from this, a Rapid Action Force jawan has also been injured and has been admitted to the hospital. According to sources, the protesters were not allowed to hold the rally.
