Kiren Rijiju revealed PM Modi rejected exemption from a bill mandating removal of leaders in custody for 30 days.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned down a proposal to exempt himself from the provisions of a new bill that would mandate the removal of prime ministers, chief ministers and ministers who remain in custody for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges. In an interview with news agency ANI, the union minister said that during cabinet deliberations, there was a suggestion that the Prime Minister should be excluded from the measure. However, PM Modi rejected the idea.“PM Modi told the cabinet that the recommendation is to keep the prime minister out of this bill, but he did not agree. PM Modi refused to give an exception to the prime minister. The PM is also a citizen, and he should not have special protection,” Rijiju said.“Most of the chief ministers are from our party. If our people make mistakes, they will have to quit their posts. Ethics should also mean something. The Opposition would have welcomed this bill had they kept ethics at the centre,” he added.Rijiju also emphasised that the Monsoon Session of the Parliament was “successful from the nation’s point of view and a failure from the Opposition’s point of view.”He highlighted that any government brings bills to save itself, but PM Modi went against the recommendation and put the Prime Minister in the category that even if he commits any corruption, then he has to go to jail and leave his position.
