Asha Devi, mother of 2012 Delhi gang rape victim Nirbhaya, on Wednesday, opened up about the ongoing Swati Maliwal vs AAP controversy and extended support to the former Delhi Women Commission chief over the assault allegations.
Asha Devi spoke about Maliwal’s fight against atrocities on women and lamented that the upright woman, who stood up for the rights of other women, was subjected to such abominable treatment by ‘those in power’.
“If a Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal is not safe, then what could one expect for the safety of common women,” Asha Devi, who fights against the crime against women, said.
She further added that she knew Swati Maliwal personally as the latter stood with her in the fight for justice for her deceased daughter Nirbhaya’s case and also helped many women in distress.
On Arvind Kejriwal’s delayed and laid-back approach to a serious allegation, Nirbhaya’s mother said, “AAP came to power in Delhi, tapping on the anger and outrage of people in the Nirbhaya case. Arvind Kejriwal claimed himself to be the son of Delhi, brother of Delhi. It is time for him to walk the talk and take exemplary action.”
Asha Devi also said that the Chief Minister should focus on correcting the rules of the jail manual, as cases remain stuck in courts for many years, and it’s the criminals who benefit majorly from it.
She also mentioned that nothing much has changed despite a decade of the Nirbhaya episode, and common people still have to run from pillar to post to get justice.
