Modi Cabinet approves ‘One Nation, One Election’, bill to be presented in Parliament

The Modi Cabinet meeting today (December 12) approved the One Nation-One Election Bill. According to reports, the Modi government can now present this bill in the House. It is likely that this bill will be presented in the winter session next week. According to reports, a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) will first be formed for One Nation, One Election and suggestions from all parties will be taken. After that, this bill will be presented in Parliament and passed. Earlier, Ram Nath Kovind’s committee had submitted its report related to One Nation, One Election to the government.

According to sources, the government is planning to send this bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for a long discussion and consensus. The JPC will hold detailed discussions with representatives of all political parties and will stress the need for collective consensus on this proposal. Currently, elections are held at different times in different states of the country. Preparations are being made to hold simultaneous elections in the country after the One Nation-One Election Bill becomes a law. According to sources, the Speakers of all state assemblies will be asked to share their views with intellectuals, experts and members of civil society. Besides, suggestions will also be sought from the common people, which will increase inclusiveness and transparency in the decision-making process. The main aspects of the bill will be discussed, including its benefits and the mechanism required to hold simultaneous elections across the country.
