The Service Tax Department has sent notices to top international schools and private universities running in Ahmedabad to pay service tax under the reverse charge mechanism service. Each school and university has been given notice to pay a different amount of tax, but sources in the department have said that a total of around 15 crore rupees is being collected from schools and universities as service tax. Following these notices, the administrators and owners of some schools are confused. The owners of some international schools say that they are not aware of any such service charge. To avoid controversy, after receiving the notice, some schools and private universities have also deposited the tax amount. According to information received from sources in the Service Tax Department, claims are made that education is provided to students in international schools as per international standards. To prove this claim, they tie up with famous international schools abroad and invite professors from there for lectures. Apart from this, they also conduct their workshops and seminars, which are paid by professors or teachers coming from abroad. Similarly, professors from abroad come to private universities. Tax has to be paid on this amount, but the schools do not pay this tax, so a notice has been issued.
