The announcement came after the Election Commission notified Rajya Sabha elections for vacancies arising in several states, including Gujarat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat, naming Rajubhai Shukla, Mukeshbhai Rathwa, Mansinh Parmar and Jitendra Meghjibhai Kanjaria for the state’s four vacant seats. With the latest nominations, the BJP has effectively applied its “no-repeat” formula to the Upper House as well, opting not to renominate three of its outgoing Rajya Sabha members.
The terms of four Gujarat Rajya Sabha MPs are scheduled to end on June 21. They include Ram Mokaria, Narhari Amin, Ramila Bara, and Shaktisinh Gohil.Of these, Mokaria, Amin and Bara have not been renominated by the BJP. Gohil, the Gujarat Congress president and the party’s lone Rajya Sabha member from the state, is also completing his term.
According to the election schedule, the notification for the polls was issued on June 1. The last date for filing nominations is June 8, scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 9, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11. Polling and counting, if required, will be held on June 18.The elections are also expected to further weaken Congress’s representation in the Upper House from Gujarat.
To secure a Rajya Sabha seat from the state, a candidate requires the support of 37 MLAs. Congress currently has only 12 MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly, significantly below the threshold required to win a seat.
With Gohil’s term ending on June 21 and the party lacking the numbers to secure another berth, Congress faces the prospect of losing its sole representation from Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha.
The state-ruled BJP is likely to secure all four seats in the election.
