During the hearing of the suo moto PIL filed in the Gujarat High Court regarding traffic regulation, reduction of accidents, and improvement of road infrastructure in Ahmedabad city, the state government informed the court that due to shortage of staff in the State Traffic Branch, the process of filling over 1,315 traffic personnel posts through direct recruitment will soon be undertaken. Out of these, more than 200 traffic personnel will be allotted to Ahmedabad. However, the Gujarat HC reprimanded the government, noting that there has been no clear explanation of how many police personnel are required as per the state’s current population, nor has any concrete analysis been carried out for future needs. The court directed the department secretary to present a progress report at the next hearing, which has been scheduled for November. In the submissions, the government stated that in order to address issues of traffic regulation and management, a requirement for 1,315 additional traffic personnel has been identified in the State Traffic Branch, and steps for direct recruitment are under consideration. An official announcement regarding this will also be made. From this recruitment, more than 200 traffic personnel will be allocated specifically to Ahmedabad city.It was further informed that, keeping in mind the needs for the next 15 years, expert consultations are being sought regarding police manpower requirements and recruitment planning.
