Ahmedabad : Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad is proud to announce the successful treatment of a 16-year-old patient suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Despite facing serious complications, the patient was discharged after 20 days in the hospital, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our expert medical team.In 2019, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) accounted for over 10.5% of all leukemia cases globally,(Source: National Institute of Health) disproportionately affecting adolescents and young adults. AML is an aggressive blood and bone marrow cancer characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells that interfere with normal blood cell production. As per National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), among AML patients with acute respiratory failure, acute kidney injury and structural brain involvement associated with poor outcome with significantly higher SOFA scores at 100 admissions recorded in this cluster, overall mortality ranges around 30-40%. The disease presents significant treatment challenges, including high relapse rates and severe side effects from intensive chemotherapy. In this case, despite initially responding well to treatment, the patient encountered life-threatening complications during the third round of chemotherapy. On Day 6, he developed febrile neutropenia—a critical condition where a severe drop in white blood cells leaves the body unable to fight infections—leading to a cascade of complications that required immediate hospitalization and intensive care.
