After a long struggle in Maharashtra’s Mahayuti alliance, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis has finally been made the Chief Minister of the state, and BJP’s worries have been dispelled. However, it has emerged that the issue of distribution of departments in the cabinet has not been resolved yet. CM Fadnavis was sworn in on December 5, but the three parties have not yet reached an agreement on the expansion of the cabinet and distribution of departments. The formation of the cabinet has been delayed after Shiv Sena demanded the Home Ministry. Some Shiv Sena leaders are only ready to follow Shinde’s orders, while some leaders are muttering about the Home Ministry among themselves. However, according to sources, the situation regarding the expansion of the cabinet is likely to become clear soon. In the Maharashtra assembly elections held last month, the Mahayuti Alliance of BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP won a clear majority by winning 230 out of 288 seats. However, due to internal tensions and pressure, the formation of a new government was delayed. The cabinet expansion is likely to be held on December 11 or 12 under the leadership of CM Devendra Fadnavis. Shiv Sena is sitting on a meeting on the Home Ministry to work with BJP and NCP, due to which expanding the cabinet has become challenging. Shiv Sena, led by former Chief Minister and current Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has staked a claim on the Home Ministry. Shiv Sena leaders Uday Samant and Sanjay Sirsat have publicly supported this demand. On the other hand, according to BJP and NCP sources, there is a continuous series of meetings going on in the state on the issue of cabinet expansion. Discussions have started on the distribution of portfolios in the grand alliance. According to sources, BJP, which won 132 seats, can keep 21-22 ministerial posts. While Shiv Sena can be given 11-12 portfolios and Ajit’s NCP 9-10 portfolios. There is a possibility of at least 43 ministers in the Maharashtra cabinet. A final decision can be taken in two to three days on how many ministers will take oath in the cabinet.
