Food and Drugs Control Authority on Friday said that it has recently crackdown on food manufacturing units indulging in adulteration. The drive is aimed to ensure that citizens can buy unadulterated and safe products during the festive season of Diwali.
Accordingly, the FDCA collected close to 900 samples of milk across the state, of which 71 had failed. It was found that units removed milk fat from the milk and added vegetable fat. The complaints of adulteration were predominantly from the Saurashtra region.
FDCA sources said that such products were sold as ‘Mava’ (the raw material used to make sweets like peda, barfi, koprapak, etc). These were sold as barfi, duping the customers. Authorities identified 45 locations, where such adulteration was taking place. Since this had vegetable fat, no milk was used to manufacture this Mava.
FDCA Commissioner Hemant Koshia said that the government wants to ensure that quality food products are made and sold during the festive season. “Those who flout the rules and put to risk the health and well being of the buyers will not be spared,” said Koshia.
