A new report, ‘Resource Efficiency and Recycling of Construction and Demolition Waste,’ reveals Ahmedabad’s leadership in sustainable waste management, recycling an impressive 1.67 million metric tonnes of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste since 2015. This achievement is due to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s partnership with DNP Infrastructures Private Ltd and marks a significant step towards a market-based recycling policy in India.The research, led by Dhaval Monani, Associate Professor and Director, Anant Centre for Sustainability and Dr Sharadbala Joshi, Senior Researcher, along with Asima Sahu, Researcher, underscores the environmental and economic benefits of sustainable waste management practices.
The report’s release was part of a larger event at Anant National University, which featured global climate leaders, Fellows from Anant Fellowship for Climate Action, and students from the university’s BTech in Climate Change programme, engaging in discussions on climate action and sustainable urban development.Since 2015, Ahmedabad has recycled 1.67 million metric tonnes of C&D waste, with the AMC currently processing 1,000 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) through its collaboration with DNP Infrastructures Private Ltd. This success is set to be enhanced by the construction of a second C&D waste processing facility in Gyaspur, Uttar Pradesh, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transporting waste over long distances.The report serves as a key milestone in establishing a sustainable future for urban development, addressing the challenges of waste management in rapidly urbanising cities.In conjunction with the report release, Anant National University’s Anant School for Climate Action hosted an interactive event where global climate leaders and students from the BTech in Climate Change programme engaged in discussions on climate technologies and innovative solutions for environmental challenges.
