Now the government has entered the fray to control the rising prices of onion. Onion prices have increased by 50 to 60 percent in the last one year. Central government has started selling onions at cheap rates by imposing control on these prices and providing financial support to the housewives. National Cooperative Consumers Federation and National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) are selling onions at a price of Rs 35 per kg through special vans in different places of the country. Will start selling onions in Delhi and Mumbai now. NAFED and NCCF are managing the government’s buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onion. which will sell through its stores and mobile vans at 38 retail locations in Delhi-NCR, Parel in Mumbai and Malad.
Onion will be sold in Ahmedabad next week:
In addition to the mobile vans of NAFED and NCCF, onions will be available at concessional rates from central warehouses and successful outlets of Mother Dairy. The second phase of this initiative will cover the cities of Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Raipur next week. The sales of this onion will start from the third week of September across the country. At the beginning of the current calendar year, Rs. 20, the price of onion today is Rs. 60 to 65. Onion prices vary depending on location and quality. So the central government has started this initiative by giving relief in onion prices. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi announced that the government will increase the quantity for onion distribution depending on the price trend. Currently, the government has a buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onion. Average price of onion on September 4 was Rs. 49.21 per kg, compared to Rs. 33.41 per kg has increased by 47.39 percent.
