Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Dhawan has given many power packed performances for India in international cricket. He has been the savior for India many times in ICC tournaments. But there is one innings that Indian cricket fans and even Shikhar Dhawan himself will remember forever. This incident happened during the World Cup in 2019. India’s second match at the Oval Cricket Ground in London was against Australia in which India chose to bat first. At the end of 50 overs, India posted a huge score of 352 runs, losing 5 wickets. In which Shikhar Dhawan scored 117 runs in 109 balls. For any cricketer, scoring a century against a team like Australia is a special event. But this century of Dhawan is something more special. Because Dhawan got a serious injury in his thumb in this match. Dhawan tried to pull a ball off the bowling of Pat Cummins. But in the meantime, Dhawan was hit by a ball on his toe and got injured. Dhawan continued to play even after that. He called the physio several times during his innings. He played this brilliant century innings with treatment including a pen killer. He hit 16 fours and took India to a strong score. However, he could not play in the World Cup later due to injury. Dhawan said on this occasion, ‘Some innings are my favorites and are close to my heart. The 2019 World Cup innings is one of these. I was batting on 25 against Australia. A 150 fast ball hit my toe and broke my toe. I kept batting with a pen killer and I scored 117 runs.’ Apart from this, Dhawan also feels special about the first World Cup century he scored in the 2015 World Cup. In which Dhawan scored a century against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. Dhawan said, ‘I am especially thankful to Dhoni that he continued to support me when I was not scoring runs and I was able to perform well from time to time.’
