Re-election season: In whose favor: By-elections will be held on 50 Lok Sabha-Vidhansabha seats

Lok Sabha elections are still a few months away, now the by-election phase is about to begin. By-elections are to be held in 50 seats in the country by the end of this year. Many of these seats belong to the Lok Sabha and most of the assembly seats are going to polls. MLAs who have now become MPs or have vacated one Lok Sabha seat due to contesting from two seats. It is believed that voting on these seats could be held along with assembly elections in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, Jammu-Kashmir and Jharkhand.


Voting will also take place on the vacated seats :
In Uttar Pradesh alone, 10 assembly seats are slated to go to polls, one of which is Mainpuri, which has fallen vacant due to Akhilesh Yadav’s resignation. Apart from this, Milkipur is also the seat of Ayodhya MP Awadhesh Prasad. Till now he was MLA from here. Elections are also scheduled for seats like Ghaziabad and Kundarki. Elections will also be held in Madhya Pradesh’s former CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan’s assembly seat Budhani. Now he has become MP from Vidisha seat. The seats vacated by Basavaraj Bomai, HD Kumar Swamy in Karnataka, Jitan Ram Manjhi in Bihar and CM Prem Singh Tamang in Sikkim will also go to polls.

In the by-election, West Bengal has 6 vacant seats followed by UP in the highest number of seats. Also, voting will be held on 5 seats each of Assam and Rajasthan. By-elections are to be held on 4 seats each in Bihar and Punjab. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also contested from Rae Bareli and Wayanad seats. After the election, he decided to remain MP from Rae Bareli and resigned from Wayanad. Now his sister Priyanka Gandhi is contesting from Wayanad. As per rules no seat can be kept vacant for more than 6 months. In such a situation, voting will take place in most of the seats by November.
