You may have often seen powerful characters like Superman, Spiderman, or Batman saving the world on television or mobile screens. These cinematic heroes possess fictional powers—but did you know that in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, lives a real-life hero who has no superpowers, yet is devotedly working to save an entire species?

Yes, you read that right! We are talking about Samirbhai Rami, widely known as the “Sparrow Man” of Gandhinagar.

At a time when the sweet chirping of sparrows is fading away amidst modern concrete jungles and radiation from mobile towers, Samirbhai has taken up the mission of bringing these tiny birds back into our courtyards through his “Happy Sparrow House” campaign. On the occasion of March 20 – World Sparrow Day, it is truly inspiring to learn about the remarkable journey of this true guardian of nature.

From Childhood Memories to Becoming the ‘Sparrow Man’

Samirbhai Rami, the motivator behind the Happy Health Club, has nurtured a deep affection for nature and birds since childhood. Having grown up in a rural environment surrounded by sparrows nesting in the eaves of homes, he was deeply moved by their declining population in urban areas. This emotional connection gave birth to a small initiative in 2016, which has now grown into a large movement.

When he started, around 15 volunteers were associated with him; today, that number has grown to 70.

The “Happy Sparrow House” stands out due to its specially designed structure—strong, durable, and equipped with a safe entry point, unlike ordinary nests.

In 2024, more than 6,000 sparrow houses were distributed, followed by over 10,000 in 2025, marking a significant contribution to environmental conservation. This year, approximately 12,000 sparrow houses have already been prepared.

In addition, to inspire the younger generation, Samirbhai visits schools and trains children to create sparrow houses from waste materials—promoting the concept of “Best out of Waste.”

Samirbhai says, “Sparrows are not extinct; they have just moved away from us. They are still around us. If we install sparrow houses properly and provide grains and water nearby, sparrows will certainly return.”

Beyond this initiative, he is actively involved in various social activities such as tree plantation, bird rescue, blood donation, arranging water pots for birds, and promoting de-addiction campaigns.
